If you live in a cooler climate, check for a '99 or '98 that the dealer has left over. Still a "new" bike and the warranty is the same. Most dealers really want to reduce inventory about September so they can stock up on snowmobiles etc. and will make a good deal.
If you live in a warm climate, wait until about December. A lot of southern dealers buy stock from up north in the fall and try to sell it during the winter. December is always a slow month for bikes and you can find some good deals.
The key is to look around as much as possible. Check out your local dealerships. Call dealerships within a reasonable radius (about 200 miles for me) and talk to them. Check the internet, some big dealers have their own sites and will ship your bike anywhere in the country. You may find a really good deal.
Good luck.
